receives altitude data from a blind encoder: “It’s either
there or it’s not.”
According to Beasley, Aeroflex is building ADS-B
capability into its test equipment. “We have the ability to
capture and decode data transmitted by the transponder
for ADS-B Mode S operation… UAT requires some
hardware changes to the test set – you have to use GPS
or UTC time, and we’ve done that by building a GPS
into our test set,” Beasley said. “One thing to watch with
ADS-B is that some of the antennas have forward gain,
and that’s not allowed for in the FAR – you’ll see too
much power. The FAR is a little out of date and could
stand revision. It’s expecting purely omnidirectional

radiation.” Aeroflex also has a completely portable
simulator that tests “GPS and Galileo – with antenna
couplers that can put an airplane anywhere in the world
and fully simulate LPV approaches. It can be used in the
FAA RNP requirements.”
While altimeter system/transponder/ADS-B test
requirements and procedures have become more complex
over the years, some of the advice Primm gave in his
2004 Avionics News article bears repeating. In particular:
• It’s important to keep your setup neat – if possible,
routing hoses under the aircraft to keep from
tripping the unwary.
• All tape and residue used to seal alternate and
duplicate static ports must be removed after testing
(Primm recommended fluorescent streamers).
