ownership companies, individual aircraft owners and
militaries.
“The major share of our business is fixed-wing,”
said Dr. Felix Pütz, regional sales director and business development for RUAG. “Within RUAG Business Aviation, we do only cockpit upgrades on helis.
MRO services are handled at the RUAG Aviation
Heli Center in Alpnach, Switzerland, which works on
both military and civil aircraft.”
Of the more than 7,700 RUAG employees, about
1,900 of them work for the aviation division with
some 300 specializing in business aircraft.
“Each site is developed as a center of excellence

for a different portfolio of capabilities and expertise,” Pütz said.
Geneva’s expertise lies with Dassault and Pilatus
aircraft, and it is an authorized Honeywell avionics
and mechanical/engines center. Munich specializes
in Bombardier, Cessna and Embraer aircraft, while
Lugano handles the Piaggio P180 and major upgrade
projects on helicopters and fixed-wing avionics.
Berne is a heavy maintenance center for the Dornier
328 prop and jet and the DHC-6 Twin Otter.

“For all business aircraft types, we offer MRO,
cabin interior, system upgrades and modifications
and aircraft painting,” Pütz said. “In Geneva and
Lugano, we also offer FBO services.”
Laps credits the service center’s success to a combination of long-term experience, fantastic facilities
and state-of-the-art tools.
“We have a unique dock for business aircraft that
can be moved to the aircraft within minutes,” he
said, sharing one example of the company’s unique
equipment. “It provides a safe and stable working
platform for all major exterior aircraft elements.”
Specializing in STCs
Across all of its sites, RUAG holds more than 400
supplemental type certificates for certified major
aircraft modifications and several hundred more
for minor aircraft changes, according to Dr. Peter
Blumer, manager of avionics and electrical engineering for RUAG Aerospace Services.
The company’s in-house engineering expertise
runs deep. RUAG is an EASA-certified design organization and EASA-certified production organization Part 21G with two design organization approval
representatives each at its Oberpfaffenhofen, Geneva
and Lugano locations.
The company also holds national military design
organization approvals and Civil Aviation Authority
approval, as well as being an EASA-certified maintenance and repair organization Part 145, and the same
for the military.
“RUAG’s experience in maintaining business
aircraft is complemented with our engineering capabilities … and our experience as an aircraft OEM,”
Blumer said.
To stay on top of technology, RUAG allocates 12
percent of sales to fund research and development.
“The R&D funds for business aviation cover the
development of new platforms; for example, aerial
survey aircraft and new products, such as our ‘smartphones onboard’ upgrade,” Pütz said. “New developments on upgrades and modifications are also funded
via the R&D budget.”
In December 2011, RUAG Aviation’s Lugano facility
completed a cockpit upgrade on a Eurocopter EC130
