ugar coating bitter economic times may alleviate chronic worry for a moment, but it will
not solve the financial challenges facing small businesses today. This is especially true
for avionics shops, particularly those whose primary customers are general aviators
who fly for pleasure or personal business. Their return to previous levels of activity has been slower
than corporate and commercial aviation operations. Shops are adapting to this not-so-new economic
landscape in many ways. They may expand or diversify the goods and services they offer, and some
might start a new company to meet an unfulfilled need or market. Regardless of the goal, the need for
capital is common to all, as are the related questions of where to find it and how to borrow it.

With record corporate profits and a robust stock market, some might think that lenders are capital rich and
looking for new customers eager to borrow it. While the
former observation is true, the latter is not. The New York
Times painted an ugly financial picture on Feb. 13, 2013.
The headline said it all: “Small Businesses Still Struggle,
and That’s Impeding a Recovery.”
While big companies, especially those with a global
reach, are doing well, the article said the recovery has left
small businesses behind. They have a hard time getting
loans because consumers are not shopping. This should

not be news to small-business owners. The article reported that in a monthly survey of its members, the National
Federation of Independent Businesses’ optimism index
was the fourth lowest in 40 years. In other words, smallaviation business owners, you’re not alone.
Many small businesses that repaid past lines of credit
are often surprised to learn lenders now classify them as
high risk because, the article reports, optimistic lenders
have been burned. Small businesses without geographic
or product diversity have smaller margins for error, and
they cannot afford the tax write-offs for investing in
