John DeMeo of EDMO Distributors
Asia Pacific, which is the Australian
office of EDMO Distributors in
Spokane, Wash. I was fortunate to
be given the opportunity to lead
the Australian office 12 years ago
and grow the business from the
ground up. My focus is to continue
to grow and expand the business,
as well as continuing to be the
premium avionics distributor to the
aviation industry in Australia and
the Asia Pacific Rim.
What was your background before EDMO?

DMO Distributors is a worldwide wholesale distributor of
aircraft avionics, avionics test
equipment, installation and pilot supplies. The company is a wholesale-only distributor and does not sell retail.
Recently, Patricia Luebke, Avionics
News contributor, spoke with John
DeMeo, EDMO Asia Pacific’s general
manager, to learn more about his
work at EDMO.
Tell me about your current
job at EDMO and what you
do for the company.
I am the general manager of EDMO

With...
Virtually straight from
school, I took on a storeman’s
role (warehouse worker) for
a Cessna dealer called Rossair
on Parafield Airport in South
Australia. At the time, I thought
this will do until I can work out
what I want with my life. After
all these years, I still haven’t
quite figured out what I want
to do. Throughout the years, I
was promoted several times,
from inside sales to spare parts
manager and to national sales
manager, until I finished there
17 years later. After this, I spent
three years in automotive and
telecommunications. When the
opportunity came to get back
into aviation, I didn’t hesitate.
What’s your favorite part
of your job?
Watching the business grow from
a one-man band to where it is now
with seven employees has been a
great buzz. I love traveling and meeting new people as well as catching
up with long-time customers, suppliers and friends. So this makes traveling enjoyable. Having such a great
team to work with here at EDMO
makes traveling stress-free. I am
very fortunate to be in an industry
where many people start as customers and suppliers and end up being
lifelong friends.
What are some
challenges, if any,
working so far away
from headquarters?
Being this far removed from
Spokane has its benefits as well as
some downfalls. Some of the major
benefits include the time difference between us. We are totally
independent and trusted to make
our own decisions, to ensure we
do what is best for the customer as
well as what’s best for the business
here in Australia. Due to the size
of the market Down Under and the
fact that it can be quite different to
the U.S. market, we have a different
product mix. There are distributorship agreements within the U.S.
that prevent our mother company
from selling some products that we,
