Selling Your Goods and Services Beyond the Border

ooking for a way to expand your business, to reach more customers
in more places? Going global may be the answer. We asked
the Aircraft Electronics Association’s experienced regulatory
consultants to share their advice and expertise for selling goods and
services in the international marketplace, and here’s what they had to say.
► What are the advantages of going global?
Bruce Baxter, AEA South Pacific regulatory consultant:
Different countries experience different economic
conditions at different times. By monitoring these
differences, you can capitalize on doing business in
countries with a good economy when your own is
experiencing a downturn. Plus, it broadens your customer
base, providing increased turnover.
Franz Redak, AEA Europe regulatory consultant: Let me
first be a bit more specific on the word global. If I speak
for the European organizations, global, to a certain extent,
also is European. This is because we used to think in
terms of nations in the past. With EASA involved since
late 2003, providing a more or less level playing field, we
also talk European.
Obviously, going beyond your national or European
borders can be a business case. However, it should be

noted that essential knowledge about other regulatory
systems and working arrangements or bilateral
agreements in place with this other state are of essence
for any organization willing or intending to access this
market. The advantages are, of course, that you could
potentially tap some more customers for your services.
Increased volume of business and other airspace or state
requirements may be a business case. In such case, your
national experience may help to create good relations with
other authorities and customers.
► Are there any disadvantages?
Baxter: Loss of control of your product. This is especially
so for OEMs, which must maintain a positive reputation
for their product throughout the whole process of sale,
installation and maintenance.
Redak: I guess there is no real disadvantage. Having said
