hen Charles Cooper founded his service center
more than 10 years ago, he never expected the
amazing aircraft that would come through his
hangar doors - from P-51 Mustangs and T-6 Texans to
Corsairs and Widgeons. Located at the Capital Regional
International Airport in Lansing, Mich., the FAA-certified
repair station provides avionics, airframe and powerplant
services for single- and twin-piston aircraft, mostly King
Air 200s and smaller.
These days, Cooper and his technicians have earned a
reputation for specializing in vintage military aircraft.
"We have a few customers who are big into warbirds,"
he said. "They tell their friends about us. We get some
really unique aircraft through here, which is kind of neat."
Along with handling basic visual flight rules and
instrument flight rules certifications for several P-51
Mustangs, Cooper and his technicians have installed
equipment on Moonbeam McSwine, the show P-51D
flown by Chicago's famed aerobatic aviator Vlado
Lenoch.
"We installed new radios and repaired the existing
Century III autopilot system," Cooper said. "It had a
bunch of problems, and we got that going."
Recently, Beacon's technicians removed all of the
existing avionics systems from several T-6s, and installed

an all-new package consisting of Garmin GNS 430W
GPS/nav/comms, Honeywell KY 196A transceivers, GTX
330 transponders and a Northern Airborne Technology
audio system.
In other special projects, Beacon Aviation recently
worked on a restored Corsair fighter aircraft and a couple
of Grumman G-44 Widgeons. In the near future, the shop
will tackle another amphibious aircraft, the Grumman
G-21 Goose.
"It will be a pretty big project, installing a new panel
with a Garmin G600 glass cockpit," Cooper said. "It will
likely take us a couple of months to complete."
