systems the pilot considers a minimal, critical panel.
A VHF nav/comm and the transponder would be the minimum
standard. If an option, the GPS and comm portions alone in an allin-one box would provide the same option - with the transponder
still in the loop, of course; if it's a glass panel, including the
standby instrument pack many pilots opt to install - or standby
power to the primary flight display system and its sensors. And
don't forget the the ADS-B Out linkage would be good to maintain,
particularly looking ahead to the ADS-B mandate in 2020.
The so-called gold standard for electrical-system redundancy
remains dual alternators powering a common main bus and a
second main-ship battery - and all backed by an e-bus or standby
bus (with either carrying reduced load totals).
Tailored approaches:
Matching the pilot to the need
No two airplanes are exactly alike; no two pilots fly exactly
the same way; and no one approach to adding electrical-system
redundancy exists, according to several avionics shops.
Some operators opt to add such redundancy in stages, spread
across two or three annuals, in anticipation of going mostly or all
glass in the future. Others go all-in when upgrading the panel with
a new all-in-one and their first glass-panel components.
Other operators elect to add a backup battery or some form, with
a switch and relay to bring it online upon the failure of the main
generating source of main battery. Of course, none of these standby
options should share common failure points with the main system,
right? It can get involved.
And then there are the pilots who choose to do something as
simple as a jump-start battery pack they can plug into the old
cigarette-lighter they likely use to power a portable GPS, electronic
flight bag or tablet computer. This approach, while challenged by
some observers as unwise, has succeeded in supplying a stricken
aircraft with enough power to find the ground, land and walk away.
Unfortunately, none of these options guarantees a happy outcome.
With all of aviation, it's the human factor at work that leads to a
more-tragic ending - such as the pilot, knowing he was running a
few items on a small standby battery, who opted to fly past perfectly
suitable alternative airports in a failed attempt to fly to his planned
destination 15 minutes farther away, and the power had been on the
standby battery for a full 30 minutes at the viable option.
This pilot reportedly made it just far enough past the last airport
option to come up short, by a couple of miles, but alive and
uninjured to tell the story.
Helping pilots avoid such stories can be the outcome of a wellconceived, appropriate standby electrical system - but only if
the aircraft owner or pilot becomes a believer before it's needed.
