ark Scheuer doesn't know what he would be
doing right now if his attempt to solve a cockpit
communications problem hadn't taken off - and
eventually taken him away from the day job he kept for
years after starting PS Engineering back in 1985.
"I can tell you I'd be one unhappy guy right now if it
weren't for PS Engineering taking off," he said.
A guy who loved
airplanes - and who in
college exchanged financing
Saturday night's beer runs
for free flight instruction
on Sundays - graduated,
got a job and bought a $5,000 Grumman AA-1A. The
noise in this Jim Bede design made communicating with
a passenger difficult to impossible; radio communications
was far from optimal, as well.
Thus came the inspiration for PS Engineering's first
product: a modern electronic portable intercom with good
sound quality. The result was the Aerocom in 1985. It
quickly caught on and became popular.
For the next nine years, Scheuer left his day job and
went home at night to work for PS Engineering for
another eight hours of 100 percent effort building a small
company - first from his basement, then from a small
shop and now from his own headquarters in Lenoir City,
Tenn.

New products came along quickly for PS Engineering,
while Scheuer continued his day job. One day, he
learned an executive he worked with flew with one of his
products.
But the strain of going full-effort on two jobs began
to catch up, and he needed a change. Shutting or selling
PS Engineering never entered the equation. Quitting his
"dream job" was daunting.
But, nerves aside, quitting
was the only solution, and
the executive understood.
By then, the small
beginnings of a
portable two-place intercom let PS Engineering grow,
significantly, in size and product line, which leads us to
today. Peek into any common general aviation aircraft
cockpit and focus on the top of the stack. The odds are
high that the label on the audio panel carries the name PS
Engineering - ditto for stand-alone intercoms.
Or it may say Avidyne, Honeywell, BendixKing or L-3.
When the Aircraft Electronics Association surveyed
its members on retrofit activity several years ago, a
large portion of all audio control systems, audio panels
and stand-alone intercoms came from one shop: PS
Engineering.
