"The discussions started at the AEA Convention in
2010, and in 2011, we worked out how we could partner
together," Scheuer recalled. Combining the best of an
audio-control panel with a 760-channel, full-feature
VHF comm would be a first.
Trig already made several models of comm
transceivers that employ a shallow-depth, panelmounted control head linked to a remote-mount box
with the rest of the radio hardware. From there, it
was a matter of designing a control head into a PS
Engineering audio panel.
The results? First, the PAR100EX and then the
PAR200 - an FAA-approved version of the PAR100EX.
Like the PAR100EX, the PAR200 has taken off,
according to Scheuer. "It's the first approved product
like it, and a great option for a small cockpit or limited
budget," he said.
The Trig TY91 provides the back end for the
PAR200, with a 10-watt speaker amplifier - at 28 volts
- and a 6-watt transmitter, whether 11 through 33 volts,
the unit's operating range.
The innovating that drives PS
Engineering: better audio-control
technologies
Take a look at the firsts - PS Engineering has been
the source for virtually every major innovation in the
field of aircraft audio avionics.
* First to provide true hands-free VOX system, the
IntelliVox patent No. 6493450.
* First to provide individually adjustable VOX
circuitry.
* First to use digital signal processing to record
aircraft radio transmissions for playback in the
cockpit, known as the IRS.
* First to provide an integrated aural warning
system into an audio panel.
* First to receive approval under FAA C50c.
* First to provide swap capability, patent No.
5903227, 6160496.
* First to fully integrate music with Soft Mute
technology, where music volume is muted and
then slowly returns after the radio transmission
ends, patent No. 4941187.
* First to introduce an FAA-approved stereo audio
panel with intercom and marker beacons, all in
the same unit.
* First to introduce AMP (active microphone
processor), a system that removes noise from the
microphone.
While it all started in 1985, with a solution to the
lack of modern intercoms to counter the noise-intense
cockpits of light general aviation aircraft, there's no
predicting where it will lead.
A pair of recent engineering-school grads - both
general aviation pilots - designed their own intercom
solution and began selling them out of the trunks of
their cars at airshows and fly-ins around the country.
That product, the two-place, portable, solid-state
electronics Aerocom, still graces the company's product
line. Now labeled Aerocom III, the pioneering portable
now comes equipped with one of PS Engineering's
many patented innovations, the IntelliVox auto-squelch
system standard on all the company's products.
IntelliVox auto-squelch was one of the company's
earliest patents, but far from the last.
"We don't like retiring products, we like making them
better," Scheuer happily said.
Among the made-it-better changes to the Aerocom III
is the ability to upgrade with a module to use two more
headsets.
As the list above shows, many more patented
innovations followed, each offering a new enhancement
valued by customers of all stripes and each further
deepening PS Engineering's hold on the market for
intercoms and audio-control panels.
And according to Scheuer, "there's more to come."
The result? PS Engineering arguably today sells
more intercoms than all its competition combined,
and similarly dominates the market for audio-control
systems - and it's not even 30 years old. But it's not
product innovation alone that underpins the success of
PS Engineering.
"Well, we owe a lot of our success to the quality of

customers for trusting us, and to our dealer network for
going the extra mile to help us satisfy our customers,"
Scheuer said.
