According to Peri, in aviation,
there are two such organizations:
the SAE, which focuses on
transport category aircraft, and
ASTM, which covers everything
else. Both organizations develop
voluntary consensus standards.
Focused on aerospace,
automotive and commercial
vehicles, SAE also offers
professional development
programs for its nearly 140,000
members who are engineers and
related technical specialists.
Established in 1905 by
automobile engineers, at its 1916
annual meeting the American
Society of Aeronautic Engineers,
the Society of Tractor Engineers,
as well as representatives from
the power boating industry,
asked SAE to assume oversight
of technical standards for their
respective industries. To better
describe its expanded focus, SAE
member Elmer Sperry suggested
the replacement of "automobile"
with "automotive," a word he
created by combining the Greek
autos (self) with Latin's motive
(of motion) to represent any form
of self-powered vehicle.
ASTM, established in 1898,
precedes SAE by a mode of
transportation. Charles Dudley
was its driving force and first
president. After earning a Ph.D.
at Yale, he created the chemistry
department at the Pennsylvania
Railroad to investigate the
technical properties of oil, paint,
steel and other materials the
railroad bought in bulk. Based on
this research, the railroad issued
its standard material specs. When
the steel industry pushed back on
rail specs in 1880, Dudley created
a committee with representatives
