signature to allow a civilian on a flight, we briefed the
mission of the day. It was a four-ship flight, all F-16s,
with everyone starting at different quadrants of the
practice area. The mission was everyone for themselves
in a dogfight style, air-to-air engagement, and the
object was to get as many kills as possible. It was a
wild ride trying to maintain situational awareness and
also manage the attack radar and electronic warfare
systems. We didn't finish first, but we didn't finish last.
How long have you been flying?

How does being a pilot impact your job?

Understanding how pilots use the equipment
we support and install eases communication with
pilots. Pilots tend to speak a different language than
technicians, and this allows for a better explanation
of a problem, which helps with troubleshooting.

I received my private pilot's license in August 1988.
As a pilot, what are your thoughts on ADS-B?
What aircraft do you fly?

I have flown single and multiengine Cessnas, Mooneys,
Pipers, Lakes, single and multiengine Beechcraft, and the
IAI Westwind. I regularly fly a Mooney 201 and a Cessna
180 and have extensively upgraded the avionics and
engine instrumentation in both.
What is your favorite aircraft to fly?

This is a very difficult question. I like most airplanes, and
they all have their purpose. They are all favorites of mine.

Wow, where do we start? The concept is good;
implementation is going to be a challenge. 2020
seems a long way out, but to make the requirement,
there are a lot of aircraft that will need to be
modified. From an installation standpoint, I don't
see a huge problem. From a paperwork standpoint,
it is going to be a more difficult challenge. It appears
as though an STC is going to be required for Part 25
aircraft, at least. This complicates the implementation
and will definitely be a challenge. 

When did you know you wanted to become a pilot?

I have always been very interested in flying. As a little
kid, I was fascinated with aviation, and it apparently
stuck with me forever.
