Fortunately, improving sleep
improves performance. A recent study
of golfers with obstructive sleep apnea
reported that patients lowered their
handicaps 11 percent - and better
golfers lowered them by more than

31 percent - after six months of treatment. Those patients also reported
having more energy and stamina, and
when it comes to your employees
and whatever sleeping problems they
might have, solid evidence exists that
you should consider their rest as part
of their fitness for work.

tant as smoking-cessation efforts in
reducing health care costs. Some even
suggest employers should be as intolerant of "working while fatigued" as
they are to working while intoxicated
or under the influence of drugs. In
both cases, they suggest you evaluate
the message you're sending employees - whether it's "sleep is for wimps"
or sleepiness is irresponsible, or even
dangerous.
If you trend toward the former, you
may be putting your company, your
customers and even the general public
at risk. This is bad management, as
24 hours without sleep, or a week's
worth of four- or five-hour nights,
causes impairment equivalent to a
blood-alcohol content of 0.1 percent,
according to Harvard Medical School.
That is legally drunk, and it only gets
worse from there. Even "catching up"
on sleep on weekends doesn't necessarily reverse those deficits. Consider
this when you must make important
decisions.
Conversely, the latter allows you
to create strategies that turn good
sleep into a performance goal for your
shop, using such initiatives as training
to recognize the effects of employees
pushing their limits, reconsideration
of overtime polices, and even offering
wellness programs for employees to
improve their sleep habits. But everything starts with opening your eyes to
fatigue as a serious business matter so
you can set expectations for yourself
and your people.
Ultimately, getting a good night's
sleep is a personal decision, but when
you choose appropriately, you'll get a
spring in your step that may just keep
you ahead of the competition. This
is the one time you can rest on your
laurels. q
