somehow remind us of revolutionary avionics products?
Can classic Johnny Cash or Garth Brooks crooners be
used to promote units from Garmin or BendixKing?
Unlikely. But as Paula Derks, AEA president, noted
in her 2014 State of the Association address, some
of the greatest country hits of all time seemingly
were written to reflect the avionics industry's challenges since 2008.
Still crazy after all these years
As an example and with homage
to Patsy Cline's timeless lullaby,
Derks confessed she was "crazy"
about the avionics industry.
"I'm crazy about the avionics
technologies that our manufacturers continue to produce day in and
day out," Derks said. "I'm crazy
about the high level of quality the
avionics technicians strive for. I'm
crazy about the safety that we all insist comes first in this industry. Most
of all - call me crazy - but I am certifi32

ably crazy about the people in this industry.
"More than 50 years ago, think back to Ed King when
he left a perfectly good corporate job ... to go build radios
in a farmhouse he owned in a little-known city, Olathe,
Kan. I'm sure people called him crazy."
Derks' point? It can help to be a little bit crazy in this
business.
So how crazy does someone in avionics need
to be these days? With essentially flat - or worse
- results spread across most of the general and
business aviation industry for several years, is it
crazy to even be here? While there's no question that prosperity in an avionics
industry burdened with a still-recovering economy requires innovation and imagination, there's
no sign the industry is lacking.
Our evidence? During the
2014 edition of AEA's annual get-together, attendees received opening-day
presentations from 23 companies covering their multiple
announcements of new products or
services. But that's not all. In fact,
there also is evidence that growing
industry confidence helped things
