Avidyne's IFD series:
Update-friendly functions from the start
As noted during a recent demonstration of Avidyne's IFD-series of
touch-control all-in-one devices by Steve "Jake" Jacobson, vice president
for product management, Avidyne can download satellite datalink weather
into one IFD540 and transfer it across to another unit.
And although two units must be loaded separately with Jepp data, one
subscription can load both units with Jeppesen's new bundled pricing.

One-step updates for multiple navigators
As a center for the release of new products and existing-product improvements, EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, is without peer in
general aviation. The heavyweights in general aviation avionics seldom
leave the show without sharing several each.
For Garmin International, one of its multiple announcements focused
on easing the chore of managing databases between multiple GTN's in a
single panel, as explained by Harrah.
A new software update allows users to synchronize updates between
multiple GTN devices after loading a database to a single unit - which
then allows that update to cross-load to the others.
As Garmin explained it, pilots who take advantage of database synchronization receive additional flexibility in the update process and have convenient access to the most current information in their avionics.
According to the company, this approach makes updates easier than
ever, giving customers the flexibility of updating a single database card
using Garmin's in-house online service.
The result: Time saved at the download to the card and again when updating multiple GTN devices by streamlining the database-upload process.
The improvement also allows a user to pre-install the next update-cycle's
database without removing the current cycle's data and allowing the next
cycles to wait, queued up and ready to work when it's effective date arrives.
The next big thing
As general aviation advances brought in rudimentary moving-map GPS
navigators, multifunction displays and ever-more sophisticated panel
equipment, data-driven devices became the rule rather than the exception.
Along the way, avionics makers have addressed the need to keep their
customers flush with current data, improving the process from the "sneaker-net approach" of getting data cards in the mail, installing the update and
returning the old card. Online processes began to take over, and today, everything can be done online with a single card.
So where does general aviation avionics data-update needs go to improve?
Look no further than the connected cockpit technology and what business-turbine and airline operators already use: wireless updates transmitted
to the aircraft via an installed node from a wireless connection in the fixed
base operator.
With ever-faster and more-secure Wi-Fi, wireless updates can't be
far behind. q
