treatment, until one day, I realized how we lost our
individual identity and began to work together as a
team. We were pitted against the other flights at every
opportunity with one test after another - clean barracks,
marching competition, and so forth. We developed
friendships and loyalty for each other. At one point,
we were asked if anyone played an instrument. I
volunteered that I played the trumpet. After graduation, I
was immediately assigned to the base band. With basic
training behind me, I had my first stripe and was treated
with some semblance of respect.
Thanks to Ike's new austerity program, which he
immediately initiated upon his election, he declared
special services like bands would be reduced in
size. Here I go again.
We were all called in to the commanding officer
in charge of the entertainment services to see
who would stay and who would be reassigned. I
was so scared of officers, and I was shaking when
I reported with my trumpet under my arm for an
assessment of my abilities. He politely asked me to
play the music on the stand in front of his desk. Try
as I might, I couldn't get a tone out of that trumpet.
It was mostly air that came out without a tone
attached.
That day, I washed out of the plush band duty at
Parks Air Force Base. I was ordered to report for
reassignment, which would become a future career
in what they called "aircraft navigation radio repair"
at Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, Illinois. And the
rest was avionics history for me.
