autopilot like Cool City Avionics' two-axis HAP-100 and threeaxis HAP-150, or a helicopter flight control system like its HFC100 and HFC-150, Irwin explained that these systems must take
a helicopter's complex flight dynamics into account and provide
fixed-wing-like stability with the failure for any kind.
For attitude data, Cool City Avionics autopilots will
interface with essentially all models of attitude gyros,
electronic flight instrument systems and/or air data systems
with outputs for a digital flight control system. Should this
external source fail, the company's autopilots automatically
switch to their internal solid-state rate and air data sensors.
More elegant is the redundant system of parallel servos
and series actuators that translate the autopilot's command
into control inputs. They work in coordinated concert, but
they also work independently should one or the other fail.
Furthermore, they provide building block features of a
stability augmentation system and force trim, according to
Irwin.
"The series actuators work quickly but have a short throw
of an eighth-inch, so they cannot maneuver a helicopter

through its envelope," Irwin explained. Like they do in an
airplane, the parallel (or "trimming") servos can move the
whole system. In many helicopter autopilot systems where
the SAS actuators also deliver the autopilot-commanded
control inputs for maneuvering flight, the parallel or "trim"
servo's only function is to re-center the control system so it is
ready for the actuator's next command. The CCA systems use
true autopilot servos that move the controls to maneuver the
aircraft; the SAS actuators act independently for short-term
stabilization. Failure of one system does not stop the other
from functioning, as happens when the SAS actuator also
delivers autopilot control inputs.
When flying the full system, the pilot selects the desired
features and modes of operation by use of the controller.
As appropriate to the axes it controls, the autopilot will fly
a heading, an indicated airspeed, a vertical airspeed, and it
will hold an altitude and fly lateral navigation and vertical
navigation approaches.
Cool City Avionics' three-axis system includes a yaw
damper the pilot can engage without the autopilot. SAS
and Force Trim are independently engaging systems. When
