ADS-B provides the best example. On the MFD, a pilot can have a
map with weather, terrain and a display of traffic that might "include
airliners 20,000 feet above you," he explained. "In cruise, you may
not need the traffic in its own tile or thumbnail. But in a busy terminal
area, you may want it segregated in its own tile so you can quickly
and clearly recognize potential conflicts."
FAA regulations allow manufacturers to configure data by tiles or
thumbnails, but how that information (that is not addressed by specific FAA requirements such as primary flight data) is displayed is
left up to the designers, according to Uczekaj. "Aspen's display has
taken years to design, and it's all based on pilot input," he said. "All
of us here are pilots, and we fly the equipment. Our experience ranges
from air transport to handheld devices, and we try to merge the benefits of all of them, from the discipline and clarity of air transport information displays to the flexibility of a handheld display. The result
of this merging is what you see in Aspen's display."
As it came online, Aspen integrated NextGen technology, but
making connections is part of its DNA. When Aspen introduced its
PFD in 2008, the average general aviation aircraft was 40 years old,

more or less. The avionics in the panel was an amalgamation of technology built throughout time as owners' needs and budget would allow. The display had to communicate with all the necessary sources,
so the Aspen PFD was the only unit that would interface with a range
of GPS sources, "from the older Trimble units to the latest Garmin
430/530Ws," Uczekaj said. Today, Aspen technology will interface
with other components with an open system. Referencing the four
units Aspen introduced in 2014, "we'd like people to buy one of our
ADS-B solutions, but we're not going to exclude them if they have
or buy another system."
Aspen's founders built their business plan on partnerships. "It's
common in our culture, at least since we entered the digital era," he
continued. "It allows a company to focus on a specific aspect of technology, such as displays, so it doesn't squander resources reinventing
the WAAS/GPS, ADS-B or autopilot wheel."
Aspen sent specs for its single and dual-band ADS-B units that
cover the spectrum of In and Out services with and without WAAS/
GPS engines to its partner, and the results wear the Aspen name. "We
believe strongly that the best way to bring the best solutions at the
lowest cost is by not vertically integrating everything," he said. "PartContinued on page 30
