strongest form of motivation toward accountability.
But he can also lose that motivation if you stop
watching, his team stops caring, or he senses he's carrying
a disproportionate load. Any of these can happen if you're
unwilling to hold every employee's feet to the fire.
But it takes time and effort to improve employee
performance from fair or adequate to excellent. You have to
be diligent in putting consequences to unproductive activities,
even those as simple as checking email during staff meetings.
You also must help employees succeed when they don't
know how to proceed, and you must be willing to create
and administer clear plans for improvement when they fall
short. In order for one employee to be accountable, you as
a manager must ensure that you've created the environment
where everyone has the same goal.
Engaging employees
Accountability means everyone pulls their own weight.
And you need them to, because the keystone purpose for
accountability is that you, as a manager, need to feel confident
that work will get done, whether you're there or not, so
your shop can serve your customers. While encouraging

accountability drives success, letting it slip also can lead to
failure.
In order for an employee to vest himself in his success, he
has to have the tools to achieve it. This includes having the
training to do the work that's expected of him, having work
processes that allow him to quickly solve problems, and
having all the information and resources at hand. He needs to
own a job, from start to finish.
But he also needs you to role model accountability - to do
as you say, to review his waypoints, and to guide him with
your expectations. Yet many employees don't feel like they're
held accountable, or aren't given the tools that allow them to
be, according to a study in the Harvard Business Journal. In
fact, respondents said less than half of managers provide that
guidance. Even worse, one-fourth of companies surveyed by
Tower Watson said they even reward bonuses to employees
who failed to meet the lowest possible performance ranking.
This is a morale-killer for dedicated workers.
The result, according to researchers at Florida State
University, is that three-fourths of employees don't know
what's expected of them at work, and most feel mistrust
