shortly. Eisenhower was getting ready
to fly to Geneva for peace talks, so they
wanted some spare radios. This radio
was all wrapped in brown paper and
taped. Being an obedient airman, I tried
to hand the paper-wrapped package to
the guard. With absolutely no smile on
his face, he put his hand on his 38 and
told me, "I don't know you, and I don't
know what is in that package, so get it
the hell out of here!" Any smile I might
have had disappeared, and I immediately did as told. Back to the radio shop
with the package, I was greeted with
lots of laughter and assumed my initiation had been accomplished.
This was where I saw my first Loran.
I never did figure out how it worked.
All I saw was a horizontal line on the
screen. It was repaired by the radar
guys, so I never learned anything about
them. We had lots of HF radios in our
fleet. I watched one of my fellow radio
men doing a ramp test on an HF. He
called Formosa for a radio check. I was
impressed. Later, I was doing a radio
check of a DC-6 assigned to Secretary
of State John Foster Dulles and was
pulled to do KP. I couldn't figure it out. I
thought I was doing important work and
then wound up clearing trays of leftover
food.
While I was there, a tech sergeant
wanted to get his FCC second-class
radio license, so he asked if I would
help him study. He was my boss, so
we were together a lot. We would quiz
each other while working, using a test
guide furnished by the FCC. When he
decided he was ready, he asked me to
go with him to take the test. After all, we
were in Washington, D.C., and it was a
short distance to drive. I passed, and he
failed - there was silence all the way
back home.
My first son, Russ, was born in a military hospital at Fort Belvoir in Virginia.
So now we were a family of four.
Getting near the end of my enlistment, I was called in for a re-enlistment
interview. I lied and told the officer I
was getting out and going in business
with my father. It was the biggest mis-

take of my life. A friend spent 20 years
in the service, and now his income was
$1,000 more a month than mine. Also,
another A1C and I were both up for staff
sergeant. He also lied and told them he
was going to re-enlist. When he got his
discharge, the Air Force paid to have
his furniture shipped home. I was not so

lucky and had to pay for mine.
Out of the service and back in Michigan, I worked as an office machine
service man. I did not like it, and there
was no challenge. I decided to try the
