giving kudos when they're appropriate is an important tool.
It's critical you understand the effect of negative feedback,
according to Pozen. Employees generally respond to it more
strongly than they do to positive feedback. Based on research
by John Gottman at the University of Washington, genuine positive input should outnumber negatives by at least five to one.
In fact, employees' moods directly correlate to the positive and
negative interactions they have during the day, which means
the latter will adversely affect their attitude and performance.
The take-home is you should save negative feedback for those
times when the potential pain is less than the expected gain; not
every situation is worth the cost.
Conversely, according to that Globoforce Workforce survey,
nearly 90 percent of employees said positive feedback is most
motivational to changing behavior. This can take several forms.
First, instead of telling employees what not to do, try telling them what they can do that would be more effective. This
replaces the "but" in the middle of the traditional good-badgood model of feedback (as in, "you're doing great on this,

but not on this") with an "and" behavior you'd prefer ("you're
doing great, and you'd be doing better with this").
Second, you should bestow praise on your people generously and publicly, according to Pozen. While you may feel
you're meeting that metric, recognize that no amount of
praise is ever enough for employees if you're trying to reinforce desired behavior.
When it comes to this positive feedback, put yourself in
position to observe it, so you can catch your people in the
act and can dole it out informally and spontaneously. Indeed,
this kind of feedback should be easy to give - and it pays big
benefits, according to business coach Andrew Jensen. Include
customer comments and co-worker kudos into the mix, as well.
In every case, you're providing them the information they
need to better serve the goals of your shop. Whether that's
breaking bad habits or sustaining good ones, the only way they
can move forward is with your input. You provide that route
with effective feedback. As a leader, it's the most effective tool
you have to plot where you want your shop to go. q
