was on the horizon when Garmin designed its GTX 330 Mode
S transponder. Betting on the future, engineers included the
appropriate margin for this expandable option. "That one
worked out pretty well. It was largely a software update; we
didn't have to change processors or anything like that."
Performance-based environment
Future proofing would not exist if the Federal Aviation
Administration had not created an environment that welcomed
performance-based certification. This major, positive change
opened the door to improved safety that comes to market
quickly and affordably for OEMs, dealers, and customers,
according to Aspen Avionics CEO John Uczekaj.
STC avionics like the Dynon 10, Garmin G5, and Aspen
E5 are prime examples. "We could not do this under the old
prescriptive Part 23 rules," he said. "The new rules allow
companies to develop new ways to prove performance without
being bogged down in prescriptive requirements based on 1980s
technology."
Founded in 2004, Uczekaj said future proofing was the
foundation of its engineering. It addressed the two biggest
customer complaints, "lags in technology between what they
see in their average life, and it's just too doggone expensive."
Aspen accepted that hardware upgrades were part of its
future-proofing equation. Guided by its mantra of "Easy to

Own, Easy to Use," engineers designed a unit that worked with
a steam-gauge six-pack panel without modifications. Software
updates plugged in upfront.
"Our hardware evolved with the certification rules," Uczekaj
said. "We designed our box to have a display head and a canister
that would fit whatever glass or electronics we were going to
use. With that architecture, we have to design our cards to fit
it." The main CPU card handles all of the system's processing,
he explained. "That way, when we needed to upgrade the
processor, we only had to change one card."
The same is true for the sensors. "In 2006, putting AHARS
and air data on a card was revolutionary; today, it's common.
But we had a vision that all the sensors would be on one card.
As sensor technology evolved, we could change that card
without touching the processor."
This architecture has accommodated advanced tech, such
as multicore processors with integrated graphics processors
and new MAX glass, which increases the display colors to 16
million from 32,768. And existing Aspen users can employ
these improvements by replacing the appropriate pieces, not the
whole unit.
A consistent user interface is another benefit, Uczekaj
