technology and capabilities, they "still operate the same way;
it's easy to go from one model to the next." That, too, adheres to
Aspen's mantra, when adding new capabilities and features such
as angle of attack.
Aspen's new ProMAX system embodies the latest processor,
sensor, and display hardware and software. Special programs
will offer affordable upgrades to existing customers now flying
Aspen units from the E5 to the Pro. "They won't have to buy
a whole new system," Uczekaj said. "That's untenable for any
operator who spent five figures to install the system four or five
years ago."
Hardware upgrades are also evolving. "Five or 10 years ago,
the units had to return to the factory because of certification
rules, configuration and quality systems. With the progression of
certification procedures, policy, and the technology itself, and the
ability to encompass qualified dealers into your quality system,
the possibility of field upgrades of hardware in architectures like
ours has increased."
In the next 24 months, Aspen would like to see some of that
work transferred to dealers who meet the quality and certification
benchmarks, Uczekaj said. "We're really working toward the
point where owners can upgrade their technology during an oil
change. I'm not sure how to do that yet, but that time is coming."

Perpetual Support
Another future-proofing avenue is perpetual support.
"When someone buys a piece of equipment from us, we
support it with repair, extended warranty, and software
updates for a long time," said Dan Schwinn, Avidyne
president and chief executive officer. "Supporting the tail
end of these things gets expensive; it's just a corporate
tradeoff you make. It also has a significant certification
overhead."
In 2018, Avidyne produced new ADS-B versions of the
software for all of its early products. This included the small
display Entegra, the Entegra forward-fit in a number of
airplanes, and the R9 flight deck units. "In several of these
cases, it was just a software update, but some were software
and hardware," Schwinn said.
Going back to the original Entegra systems Cirrus
installed in 2002, "we added WAAS when it came along,
XM weather, approach charts, engine instruments, and
we put ADS-B on them last year," added Tom Harper,
marketing director.
This approach shapes its engineering philosophy.
"We tend to design our products with as much processor
headroom as we can fit in the box," Schwinn said. "At the
end of the day, the processor is not a very expensive part of
the total end customer price. The same goes for storage."
While Avidyne maxed out memory in the original design,
