The size of firmware files depends on the system,
Kauffman added. "Our new AeroVue Touch firmware
image is about 250 megabytes. Looking at a full database
with navigation and terrain information can be in the
multi-gigabyte range depending on the geographical
areas covered."
A cyclic redundancy check mechanism will verify
firmware integrity on download and during system start,
according to Kauffman. The process can also verify the
compatibility of the firmware version and prevent the
loading of an older version.
Wi-Fi Data Mules
Given the expense of satellite and cell data, Wi-Fi is
the preferred download source. A growing number of
airports are providing this connection, Kauffman noted,
even on the ramp in some instances.
When there is no airport Wi-Fi, Stone recommends a
"data mule," a phone or tablet with the Garmin Pilot app.
Through a home Wi-Fi network, it periodically checks
for and downloads database updates. Garmin's Flight
Stream 510, a certified multimedia SD card with Wi-Fi
that plugs into the avionics network, unloads the mule -
with the pilot's approval - after the two make a cockpit
connection. In the background, the database concierge
distributes the updates to the different networked boxes
such as two GTNs and a G500 TXi.
"From a technical standpoint, we could leverage the
same architecture to do this with firmware updates, but
the regulatory requirements would have changed to
accommodate this," Stone said. "A couple of gigs transfer
in less than 10 minutes. If a pilot likes to taxi as soon as
there is oil pressure, chart streaming will put the chart
the pilot just called up at the head of the queue while it
continues to load the rest in the background."
Data mules are but one step in technology's progress,
Kauffman said. "Initially, we will update databases and
possibly firmware using iPads or similar devices. We
expect our noncertified products to provide updates
without the use of another device sooner than certified
