Only seven aircraft were grounded in 2012 as a
result of significant SAFA inspection findings. In the
majority of cases (4,204), the findings were relayed to
the operator and its national aviation authority; 1,043
inspections required corrective actions before flight.
Generally, though, assuming you are well-prepared
for the SAFA inspection and your aircraft is wellmaintained, findings should be minor and should
be corrected prior to your next flight to the EU or a
participating state.
It's important to know your inspection findings are
reported to the Federal Aviation Administration, so even
minor findings, if in violation of FAA requirements,
should be resolved quickly in order to ensure compliance
in the U.S. The EASA also reports findings to the
national aviation authority of the state of the operator
or aircraft registry, so findings which may be widely
applicable to a particular aircraft type or range of
operators can be addressed holistically.
Don't get too worked up about the possibility of a
SAFA ramp check. If you're well-prepared and your
aircraft is in good shape overall, these are generally
non-events. Don't get complacent, though. Review your
SAFA check preparational work frequently to be sure it
is current and thorough.
