The E5 is an ideal steppingstone into glass thanks to
the upgrade paths available. Owners and pilots have the
option to build their dream glass cockpit in steps - or all
at once.
Owners also enjoy the option to upgrade the E5 to a
fully TSO'd Evolution 1000 primary flight display that
still keeps the total price under $10,000.
Another example, aircraft owners enjoy an upgrade
path to improve E5 display and add compatible TruTrak
Vizion autopilot for less than $10,000, according to
Aspen.
Aspen earned an approved model list supplemental
type certificate for the E5 covering hundreds of aircraft
models. The E5 is also popular among builders and fliers
of experimental, amateur-built aircraft.
The E5 works in both 14- and 28-volt electrical
systems and is compatible with a large number of
autopilots, though some require an adapter or interface
to function fully.
BendixKing: AeroFlight KI 300
With a starting price under $3,500, BendixKing's
KI 300 Flight Director Indicator provides an approved
solid-state replacement for an existing 3-inch KI 256/255
Flight Director Indicator, KG 258 Attitude Indicator and
other similar instruments. It provides the same operation
and interface to autopilots with a modern LCD display
driven by MEMS attitude reference sensors.
An integral battery provides up to two hours of backup
power in the event of a failure of the aircraft electrical
system.
The KA 310 autopilot adapter, due this quarter,
natively supports BendixKing's KAP 100, 150, 200 and
KFC 150, 200, 225 autopilots when linked to the KI 300.
The autopilot can be aligned and the air data computer
calibrated, both with AeroFlight in the panel, simplifying
installation and maintenance.
Upgrading to the KI 300 and KA 310 costs only
slightly more than a single overhaul of the typical
mechanical gyros used to drive those autopilots, and
others. But the upgrade delivers a solid-state glass PFD
instead of merely an overhauled AI with flight director
function.
The KI 300 fits into the standard instrument opening,
while the KA 310 mounts remotely. The KI 300 goes
for under $3,500 from some avionics shops; the KA
310 adds another $1,795 individually. The pair are also
available as a package at a slightly lower price.

Dynon's EFIS-10A

Dynon: EFIS-10A
Consider Dynon a pioneer in bringing low-cost glass
to general-aviation aircraft, starting with the EFIS-10A.
Designed to fit into a standard 3 1/8-inch instrumentpanel opening, the EFIS-10A brought approved glasscockpit technology down to a new low. This design
makes the EFIS-10A an easy choice, ideal for replacing
the analog attitude indicator in a traditional six-pack
configuration.
This innovative design consolidates all six standard
flight instruments into a sunlight-readable, 4-inch
diagonal, liquid-crystal display. A row of six buttons
along the bottom bezel provides the pilot controls
to perform flight-related functions, configure the
instrument and perform initial calibrations.
The PFD displays all its instruments in a format
common to higher-dollar PFDs, with a vertical airspeed
tape on the left, an AI in the center and above that with
DG indication, roll angles below and slip/skid ball
bottom center. On the right side, another vertical tape
provides altitude and vertical speed, with altimeter
setting at the bottom of the tape.
Dynon also gives owners two upgrade options for
the EFIS-10A. Dynon offers an optional angle-ofattack/pitot design that alerts pilots of potential stall
conditions.
To keep the instrument working in the event of an
electrical-system failure, Dynon also offers an optional
lithium-ion backup battery capable of keeping the EFIS10A operating for two hours.
The brain of Dynon's EFIS-10A is its advanced
ADAHRS, integrated into the unit. This ADAHRS
integrates more than a dozen solid-state sensors known
for their reliability and exceptional performance. Each
ADAHRS undergoes a rigorous calibration regime at the
factory to ensure accuracy over its full operating range.
The EFIS-10A design tolerates aggressive
flight maneuvers and automatically corrects
itself anytime maneuvering exceeds the sensors'
