Esterline
Esterline subsidiary Leach International traces its history
to 1919 - 100 years ago - and U.S. Navy radio operator Val
Leach, whose automatic antenna switch and power relay
became the company's first product. Now under the Esterline
company umbrella, it's the oldest and largest worldwide
supplier of aerospace relays and solid-state switching
devices. Matt Farides, North American business development
manager, presented his company's latest products to the AEA
Convention: high-voltage relays.
"As the industry has moved more and more toward
high-voltage systems - high-power systems in general -
everyone's talking about electronic
thrust and more-electric aircraft in
general, we've seen more and more
requests for high-voltage power
systems," Farides briefed attendees.
"So what we're introducing today,
actually, is a new high-voltage
contactor. This will enable new
levels of reliability for high-voltage
systems.
Leach's HVDC contactor
"There's a few technologies
out today that allow for that arc
suppression for high voltage, but we have a novel, patented
solution for that. This is going to enable us to actually have
the same reliability for our high-voltage DC contactors as
what we have always had for AC contactors, which is new
for the industry."
According to the company, the benefits of Leach's HVDC
contactors and their proprietary active arc suppression
includes reduced contact erosion, resulting in a higher
number of cycles. Galvanic isolation is ensured by design,
and electronic arc suppression is protected against indirect
effects of lightning. The contactor is bidirectional and
not polarity sensitive, and customers will see improved
electromagnetic interference emissions levels during
switching. Leach HVDC contactors are designed to MILPRF-6106, with 50,000 cycles at full rated load and a
mechanical life 100,000 cycles. Flexible architecture allows
options up to 1,000 amperes, and the company expects to be
operating at 270 VDC, 540 VDC and up to over 3 kV.

Flightcell
As relatively inexpensive airborne communication services
based on cellular networks have become increasingly popular
among operators, so have options for when the aircraft is not
within range of a suitable cell tower. Corporate and business
users have come to depend on reliable ways to reach out, and so
do law enforcement, EMS and a host of other special-mission
operators, often supplementing their terrestrial communication
services with satellite access.
Enter Flightcell's DZMx, which combines cellular with
satellite communications into a single, seamless box. With
the DZMx, operators have two connectivity methods for their
voice, text and data communication needs, including flight
tracking and operational data. The DZMx is built in a modular
design allowing multiple transceiver configuration options, and
room for expansion. Customers
can equip with up

transceivers, plus
expansion options
like ARINC429
connectivity and
a second Ethernet
port.
Flightcell's

New from Flightcell
for 2019 is the DZMx Connect
app. "We want operators to be able to communicate
in the air like they do on the ground," Flightcell's Michael Eddy
told AEA attendees. "This app allows pilots and crew to be able
to access ground-based voice and data services from their smart
devices."
Flightcell's Connect app is available for both iOS and
Android devices and is used with installed DZMx units via
Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Once installed, it allows phone book access
and transfer of contacts between the DZMx and the mobile
device, plus messaging and voice-call functions. Users can send
and receive SMS messages or initiate and answer voice calls
with the Connect app, whether connected via cellular or satellite
networks.
