Avionics News: Where
are your graduating students
being placed? Are many taking
jobs outside of aviation?
Howell: Our biggest
employer for our A&P graduates
is Piedmont Airlines. They
have a maintenance facility in
Roanoke, Virginia, which is
just 45 minutes away. I'd say
that 65% of the mechanics at

that facility are graduates of our
program. Obviously, Piedmont
is a great partner for us.
They help sponsor our
students at the annual PAMA
maintenance competition.
In addition, at the start of
each class, they donate a nice
mechanic's toolbox to the
program. We give it away to one
of the graduates who goes to
work at Piedmont.
Piedmont has seen the benefit
of working with and hiring
technicians who live in this area.
Those are the people who have
the best chance of staying on for
a long time.

Avionics News: What is the
typical yearly salary of one of your
graduates?
Howell: It's around $38,000
for a recent graduate. That's a
respectable salary for graduating
from a one-year program.
Avionics News: Do
you have any active apprentice
programs with local MROs or
OEMs?
Howell: Because ours is a
Part 147 one-year program, our
students cannot participate in any
internship program while still in
school. But when they are done
we have an active internship with
Dynamic Aviation in Bridgewater,
Virginia. They do a lot of aircraft
modifications for the government
and military. They're also doing
the restoration on the Lockheed
Constellation that served President
Eisenhower as Air Force One in the
early 1950s.
We also recently began a
program with Pratt & Whitney.
They are taking two of our students
into their intern program working
on their military jet engine
program. The Pratt & Whitney
representatives said those two
phone interviews were the best
they'd ever had with aviation
college students.
A short time ago, we had
representatives from Delta
Air Lines at our facility. They
completed an inspection of our
program and are interested in
putting together a new internship
program.
