technology with an aviation option. It split off over 10 years
ago when we created a Bachelor of Science in aviation
maintenance with electrical technology concentration.
These graduates take all the courses necessary to earn the
FAA A&P certificate and take 19 credit hours of focused
electrical engineering technology coursework.
With regard to our avionics training, instead of a
traditional avionics program, we offer our A&P program
with electrical engineering technology, which is a much
higher-level program and is more academically rigorous.
It's more than training technicians the basics. Traditional
avionics programs don't have the depth of our electrical
engineering technology training.
Avionics News: How many students have you
graduated?
Fortier: We have graduated 59 students in total, 35
with the Bachelor of Science in engineering technology
with aeronautical/electrical concentrations and 24 with the
current Bachelor of Science in aviation maintenance with
electrical engineering technology. Most people don't know
about this degree option as a career. The starting pay is
good, and our graduates get placed quickly.
Avionics News: How has enrollment changed during
the past five years?
Fortier: It hasn't really changed. Typically, we have
four to 10 new students each year. The highest number of
students was in 2011 when we had 13 enrolled. But it can
vary dramatically. Right now, in my pipeline for next year,
I have no new aviation maintenance students coming in, but
that changes.
Usually we get people who come to LETU for
engineering and decide they want aviation and transfer
over. Sometimes we have aviation maintenance students
who have a high math ability, find that they enjoy working
with electronics, and choose to switch to this program once
they arrive.
Avionics News: Where do you see your program in
five years?
Fortier: With the increase in aircraft automation and
the proliferation of UAS, we are anticipating that these
degrees will grow. The challenge is to market this degree to
the right audience.
Avionics News: How are you preparing students to
become technicians and satisfying the increasing demand
of these advanced technology fields in avionics, unmanned
aircraft systems and aircraft electronics?
