Remember, the avionics is only one element of the overall
aircraft. Wiping avionics displays with a microfiber cloth
dampened with isopropyl alcohol (a flammable liquid) is
one thing; spraying the upholstery of an aircraft interior
with a flammable liquid is totally different and could be
hazardous. The second item I would like to highlight from
the Service Information Letter is a cautionary note which
states, "Do not spray any cleaner or chemical directly
onto the surface of any components. Apply the cleaner or
chemical directly to the microfiber cloth or cotton swab."

The final item to note is the Honeywell Service Information
Letter addressing the subject of Alternate Cleaning Solution
Usage in Flight Deck. In this case, this Service Information
Letter is applicable to all Honeywell products installed
in aircraft flight decks. In particular, Honeywell has
published two tables: one of non-approved cleaning
solutions and a second of approved cleaning solutions.
While not an exhaustive list of every avionics
manufacturer, it is clear there are ample resources for
shops to be able to advise their customers, the aircraft
owners and operators, on the correct cleaning procedures
to protect their investment in avionics equipment while
still providing a safe and healthy cockpit.
Check with the individual avionics manufacturer to
determine if it has published any guidance on cleaning
and disinfecting of the avionics equipment. And then
remember that this information cannot be contrary to aircraft
manufacturer cleaning instructions and should be used to
supplement any guidance in the maintenance manuals.
As Tulis pointed out in his article, spraying an avionics
approved alcohol-based cleaner on instrument panels can
cause damage to the paint. I would add that spraying an
alcohol-based solvent on plastics, glareshields and windows
can also be hazardous.
This is one of those occasions where good intentions
can go terribly wrong. A little effort on your part will help
aircraft owners protect their $50,000 investment. q
