What trends are you seeing in your particular
industry segment?
When I first started in this industry, avionics personnel were
mainly performing inspections and rectifications of defects. Over
the last 20 years, our role has developed into more of a specialist
field of retrofit and modification responsibility. With CASA allowing mechanical engineers to fill more and more of the traditional
avionics roles, it has further enhanced our role as the specialists
of modification work.
What do you think our industry does well?
As I mentioned, our role is now more of a specialist field. This,
I think the majority of avionics shops do very well.
Are there ways to expand or build on that?
With Garmin, Genesys, Aspen and others building options for
aircraft owners, people now have a large choice of avionics equipment and are able to install cutting-edge avionics in some of the
older aircraft. This is something that we need to continue to do as
an avionics community to drive increasing sales and opportunities.

What do you like most about the AEA?
I personally think the avionics industry is very fortunate to
have an association like the AEA. It gives a voice to all the avionics shops so they can be involved as one body to help shape
our industry. By this, I mean offering very credible input to the
various national airworthiness authorities as well as feedback
to the manufacturers. I also see it as an excellent forum to see
and experience new developments in our field and a unique way
to make face-to-face contact with not only our industry peers
but also the people who represent major avionics suppliers and
developers.
How have you benefited personally and professionally?
I have made some very profound friendships over the years
because of the AEA. These friendships have helped the business
in insurmountable ways. In fact, these friendships have even
helped my daughter.
Some time ago, she arrived interstate on the eve of a long Easter holiday weekend and went to withdraw some cash, but the
ATM would not give back her one and only credit card. She was
using this card for accommodation, food and all her remaining
expenses. I was able to contact a friend who is also an AEA member and ask him for assistance. The owner of the shop drove 50
