In Memory: Dick Donovan
Dick Donovan, founder of Terra Avionics,
died Aug. 7, 2020. He was known affectionately
by many in the sport aviation community as
the man behind the "Blue Brick," the first
720-channel handheld comm-transceiver radio.
Donovan and his team at Terra Avionics went
on to design and build a full line of avionics
for the retrofit and
homebuilt market
segments of general
aviation. Terra was
acquired in 1996 by
Trimble Navigation,
and the aviation
product line was
subsequently spun off
to FreeFlight Systems.
Donovan was
raised on a farm in Kansas located next to
a small airfield that trained pilots for World
War II. Watching the planes fly overhead,
he dreamed of a career in aviation. After a
brief stint in the Coast Guard and completing
his electrical engineering degree at the
University of Kansas, Donovan landed his
first engineering job with Wilcox Electric.
Wilcox designed and manufactured avionics
for airline and military aircraft use. As
a young engineer with Wilcox, Donovan
designed transponders for the airline
industry and IFF units for the military. His
most notable design projects from that time
were the IFF units on the legendary SR-71
Blackbird, U-2 and the A-7 military aircraft.
While at Wilcox, Donovan also worked with
and became close friends with former AEA
President Monte Mitchell. Starting in the early
1990s, Donovan and his wife, Marilyn, were early
supporters of the scholarships created by Mitchell
and the AEA Educational Foundation to assist the
next generation in finding an aviation career path.
"My dad left his mark on the general
aviation industry, and our family is very
proud of what he accomplished," said his
son, Michael Donovan. q

FAA to host virtual
International
Rotorcraft Safety
Conference

Registration is now open for the Federal Aviation
Administration's first virtual International Rotorcraft
Safety Conference, which will take place Oct. 27-29 to
explore ways to reduce the national and international
helicopter accident rate.
Leaders from the FAA's Aircraft Certification and Flight
Standards Services will open the conference, followed
by programs for the entire helicopter community. The
first day will include presentations about coping with the
aftermath of a helicopter accident, the consequences of
failing to follow procedures, the impact of drones, and the
benefits of safety management systems.
The next two days will focus on maintenance
and operations. On Oct. 28, mechanics will receive
programming designed by experts from Schweizer, Bell,
Airbus, and Robinson helicopter companies. On Oct.
29, programming for pilots will include topics regarding
human factors, helicopter safety ratings, accident
prevention and investigations.
The conference is directed at rotorcraft pilots,
mechanics, operators, small company owners, government
regulators and industry executives from the United States,
Canada, Europe, Asia and many other locations. The event
will offer Inspection Authorization and FAA AMT and
WINGS credits.
