Webb joined his team for some
long hours installing transponders
and other systems.

in his family for nearly 40 years.
While he spends much of his time
helping customers match their
aircraft mission to their avionics
options, Webb also puts his 33
years of technical experience to
work in the shop.

Before my father owned the
company, it was called Central Florida
Avionics, and he worked there. The
owner would let me come out when
I didn't have school or on holidays to
clean and vacuum the airplanes and
be a gopher of sorts.
The installation side and
everything that goes with it
intrigued me. I liked that nothing
is really ever the same. Every
installation is different. I liked the
differences in the installations, the
airplanes and the people.
Over time, I took on the tasks
of a ramp technician, running out,
checking radios and other things.
If I'd see that something wasn't
working right, I'd take it out, enter
it into the system and have bench
technicians repair it. When they
were done, I'd put it back in the
airplane and verify it.
That allowed me to learn a lot
about various systems. I learned
where certain issues and points
of failures typically show up, so I
was able to fix some things quickly.
From there, other technicians

began handling more of the ramp
work. Eventually, we needed to
have more people performing
installations, so I shifted over to
help with those.
I could do it because I knew a lot
about the systems. Of course, back in
those days, there wasn't necessarily
a lot to them. KX 155s, audio panels
and intercom systems weren't as
complicated as the systems today. I
learned to install KFC 200 autopilots
and other systems during those years
and just kept going.

When you think you've
got the industry figured out,
something changes it all up
again. People always ask, "If
I buy this now, do you think
anything different is going to
come out?" I tell people I've
stopped trying to figure out
what could be next.
No one would have ever
thought a G5-type of system
could be installed in an
airplane. Yet, they're now
being installed in airplanes all
the time. The FAA seems to
be embracing new technology,
and it's spurring a whole new
platform for avionics to come
out in the future.
