Autoworks. It quickly became the largest and best auto service
shop in town."
In just a couple of years, that success allowed Tredway to
finally realize two of his great dreams: to learn to fly and buy
an airplane.
"I guess you could say I'm the typical aviation nut," he
said. "I grew up in a small town in southern Missouri and
would walk 5 miles to the nearest airport in hopes of seeing an
airplane on the ramp."
His first airplane was a 1974 Cessna 182P, which he used
to finish his private pilot training. After flying the Skylane for
about a year, Tredway traded to a Cessna Turbo 210. Averaging about 300 hours a year, he quickly added his instrument,
commercial, CFI, multiengine and seaplane pilot ratings.
To top it off, Tredway earned his A&P in 2000. And for the
record, he currently owns a Cessna 340 and a partnership in a
classic 1959 Cessna 182.
In 2001, he sold Bret's Autoworks to his employees - more
about that later - and moved his wife and two young daughters to
Guatemala, where he flew the Turbo 210 all over Central America and southern Mexico in support of church mission work.

You don't know what you don't know
After returning to Colorado in late 2003, Tredway learned of
the opportunity to purchase the assets of a "struggling" Cessna
service center at Denver's Rocky Mountain Airport, which was
the same Cessna facility where he had serviced and bought
parts for his 182 and Turbo 210. He renamed the company
Legacy Air.
"I had earned my A&P at the airport and, being a Cessna
owner, knew the original owner well," he said. "He was a good
mechanic but not so good at business. He had overextended,
overexpanded and made some tax mistakes. The business was
in bad shape, but I knew it had potential and bought it.
"My mistake was that I got into aviation with the idea that I
was going to do the same things to expand the business as I did
with my automotive shop. Well, I was wrong. I quickly learned
that for some reason, the aviation maintenance business model
was to keep your rates and your employees' salaries low. It
never occurred to me when I was the airplane's owner buying
the services this was the case."
