Guardian Avionics new smartPanel mounts
With such a strong push to develop a new generation of
affordable iPad-based multifunction information and display
systems for certified and experimental GA airplanes, it seems
natural that Guardian Avionics would create a series of iPad
smartPanel mounts.
The smartPanel mounts make it simple for pilots to fulfill
Vij's goal of delivering a seemingly endless array of advanced
digital capabilities into all GA aircraft at affordable prices.
"The goal of our iPad smartPanel mounts is to make it easier
for pilots to use these new apps as their secondary MFDs," Vij
explained. "The growing number of apps not only provide all
the capabilities of traditional panel-mounted avionics, but they
do so without any danger of obsolescence. With an iPad-based

And by the way, if you're worried that your iPad will
run out of power during the flight, each of the smartPanel
iPad mounts comes with a built-in USB plug.
"This type of system is especially beneficial to pilots
flying older airplanes with analog six-pack instruments,"
he said. "If you use an iPad, for just a few hundred
dollars, you can bring a world of new capabilities and
safety features into your cockpit. For example, when
connected to our smartLink 851, you can display all the
engine data on the iPad. At the same time you see it on
the display, it's being automatically captured and then
uploaded to our smartCloud web application. Now think
what that kind of sophistication would cost if you did
it with legacy panel-mount avionics? More than most
pilots can afford."
Speaking of keeping things affordable, Vij is proud
of the fact that the FAA has approved the smartPlane
product line for installation in any FAA Part 23 certified
airplane under the Non-Required Safety Enhancing
Equipment authorization, or NORSEE. That means
there's no expensive installation, supplemental type
certificate or field approval required. All you need is a
minor alteration entry in the aircraft's logbook. q
