U.S. - the benefits of satellite-based ADS-B provide the
potential to accurately monitor and manage air traffic
over the two-thirds of the Earth covered by oceans,
as well as those vast expanses of land lacking ADS-B
ground stations.
Say, hello, ADS-B diversity. That's the technology
needed to make satellite-based ADS-B a viable system in
all those places where it's still needed.
It's unlikely we'll see an all-encompassing mandate
for ADS-B diversity on par with the mandate that went
into effect Jan. 1. But for operators plying airways
over oceans, remote expanses of terrain, and remote
mountains and deserts, ADS-B diversity is a distinct
possibility because it provides a solution independent of
a ground network.
To achieve that diversity means using a transponder

with two antennae - one mounted in the usual belly
location, a second one perched atop the aircraft fuselage.
Relatively few existing ADS-B transponders provide for a
dual-antenna installation, with one in the traditional spot
on the belly of the aircraft and the second mounted where
the Aireon satellites can "see" the antenna - line of sight.
The dual-antenna approach is similar to what we
see in active-traffic-avoidance and traffic-collisionavoidance systems. TCAS systems provide the mostcommon top-and-bottom antennae systems flying to
preclude blind spots for active collision-avoidance
systems. And some nations, looking ahead, are already
requiring ADS-B diversity.
The FAA is talking with Aireon about how the airtraffic-surveillance network might benefit by using
the satellite-based system to monitor oceanic traffic
crossing both oceans used by international traffic today
- but without a viable surveillance-and-management
capability because of a lack of radar coverage.
