Diversity: The antenna on top
Avionics makers may not have worried about diversity in the
nine-year run-up to the FAA mandate's effective date, but they've
been quick to respond to the forward-looking need for diversity in
ADS-B for 1090ES products.
Garmin received approval for its GTX 335D and GTX 345D
diversity Mode S transponders in December 2019, and uAvionix
started shipping its tailBeaconX for experimental aircraft around the
first of this year.
Both the uAvionix and Garmin models satisfy the diversity
requirement to use the Aireon satellite-based ADS-B system. These
three ADS-B solutions also meet Canada's pending requirement for
ADS-B transponders to support diversity.
Aireon completed testing, but uAvionix has yet to receive
approval. The uAvionix tailBeaconX, however, does much more
than squawk an ADS-B Out position report like most solutions.
