earns big reputation with owners of
experimentals, legendary aircraft

hannon Rivers loves working in the tight
quarters behind an instrument panel and chasing
electrical issues down long stretches of wiring,
especially if it's on a 1943 Corsair or a P-51 Mustang. As
owner and founder of Pee Dee Avionics in Cheraw, South
Carolina - near the Great Pee Dee River - it's a passion he's
able to indulge in every day.
As one of the few avionics
technicians experienced with
warbirds and experimental aircraft,
Rivers sees steady business from
local enthusiasts who want to keep
their unique aircraft flying.
"My passion is warbirds and
experimentals," said Rivers, an
avionics technician, A&P mechanic with inspection
authorization and private pilot with more than 20 years of
experience in aviation. "There just aren't a lot of people
who work on these unique aircraft - warbirds in particular.
I've been fortunate enough to learn from older folks who
maintained some of these aircraft back in the early days."
According to Rivers, most owner-operators of warbirds
prefer to keep their aircraft authentic to the period but elect
to have some modern avionics installed to increase flight

safety and function. On the experimental side, he has noticed
a huge trend in operators choosing to take advantage of new,
affordable technology. Demand is high for the Garmin G3X
Touch flight displays and Dynon flight displays. Vans RV
operators are typically requesting a full glass panel versus a
small flight display or a mini EFIS system as in the past.
"Some of the autopilots that are
out now have features that you
would normally find in a corporatelevel aircraft," Rivers said. "We're
doing a lot of full-feature autopilot
installations in aircraft that would
have been lucky to have a wing
leveler in the past. The operators
are getting great technology and a
lot of function for the price. When I first opened, autopilot
installations were few and far between. Now, we're doing a
lot of them."
The son of an automotive mechanic, Rivers spent his
teen years working on cars. Family members who were
involved in aviation sparked his interest in flying, leading
Rivers to discover a career in avionics. In 2017, he
achieved his longtime goal to earn a private pilot's license.
"I love flying," Rivers said. "I love riding in airplanes.
