" In spring, when we didn't know what was going on,
we took it very carefully. I did not work on an airplane
while the customer was waiting. They had to leave it,
and I'd work on it the day after, " wiping things down
before and after starting the job. With his wife, the
shop's other employee, social distancing provides the
shop's margin of safety. " I've noticed in our business
that very few wear masks. Some demand them, but most
do not bother with them, " he said.
" I don't do flights with customers anymore. I do
complete system checks on the ground. I'm 73 years
old and on Social Security and Medicare, so that eased
the challenge. We've always had work, and I'm still in
business because the electronics are so interesting.
It is amazing how far they've come in the past 30
years, " and he's curious to see what's coming.

The three-person shop " has been doing
everything like normal, always social distancing
and wearing masks on customer flights, but I
haven't done a bunch because business has slowed
down on account of the virus, I believe. We pretty
much have the ADS-B backlog whipped; we've
never really been this slow. "
Cincinnati Avionics, Batavia, Ohio,

" We're busy, and work hasn't changed a whole
lot, other than following the guidelines put out by
the state of Ohio: social distancing, wear masks,
and doing self-wellness checks. Our biggest customer
interaction is flying with customers when they pick up
their planes, but everyone wears masks. Phone calls
and email are the primary form of customer contact, but
when customers come in, they ask 'What do you want
me to do?' They are amenable to whatever because it is
all different, " he said.
The five-person shop, which includes an inspector
and four repairmen, sanitizes the airplanes before
and after work, which also has not changed. " We've

been busy like this for about three years now. I've just
finished scheduling March 2021, and I'm moving into
April. It started with ADS-B, and now it is Garmin
autopilots and glass. That's all we're doing right now.
Guys haven't stopped investing in their airplanes. I just
need three more repairmen and we'd really be set, but
you cannot find anyone right now. "

" Other than wearing masks, our customer interaction
hasn't changed a great deal. A lot of it is what we did
before by phone, email and some texts. Other than
some shipping delays, business has been as normal
as possible. We do all of our system verification and

troubleshooting on the ground. But with a full panel
upgrade and/or autopilot, you have to close the loop
on how the plane flies to determine a job well done,
especially with autopilots, because the ground checks
do not introduce the flight dynamics. "
The four-person shop serves general aviation from
piston to turboprops. " Most customers go and fly and
give us a shout if there's a problem. When there is no
