controllers advise - and get that ADS-B system installed
as soon as possible to help end the need for waivers.
An unanticipated break: Elimination
of RVSM authorization requirement -
thanks to ADS-B
One of the new benefits of ADS-B compliance
came to high-altitude operators: the elimination of the
requirement for FAA approval of authorizations for
accessing reduced vertical separation minima at altitudes
above Flight Level 290 and Flight Level 410.
RVSM increased the number of aircraft that can fly
in a particular volume of controlled airspace, helping
improve airspace capacity in such sectors.
The original standard for vertical separation in
controlled airspace came along in 1958 when it was set

at 1,000 feet from sea level to FL290, but at 2,000 feet
above FL290. The greater minimum separation above
FL290 was required due to the reduction in accuracy of
altimeters as aircraft flew higher and the aforementioned
accuracy deterioration of radar and altitude encoders.
Special requirements to allow the reduced vertical
separation began in phases between 1997 and 2005 for
aircraft equipped to meet an International Civil Aviation
Organization standard.
Implementation on the North Atlantic track began
in March 1997 for FL330 through FL370. The entire
western hemisphere implemented RVSM FL290-FL410
on Jan. 20, 2005. Africa implemented it on Sept. 25,
2008.
But the FAA required special authorization for aircraft
and pilots. The elimination of the equipment authorization
came as yet another benefit of ADS-B Out. q
