Those of us teaching avionics
and aviation maintenance need to
ask ourselves whether or not we
are teaching students enough about
batteries, generators, alternators,
inverters and motors. Traditionally,
those in an airframe and powerplant
curriculum would learn about the list
above. Most A&P curriculums devote
the time available for battery subjects
to lead acid and nicad batteries. Few,
if any, programs devote a significant
amount of time to lithium polymer,
lithium iron phosphate, or lithiumion
batteries. In my experience, A&P
students are reluctant learners of most
things electrical. The result is A&P
mechanics learn about the systems used
on electric aircraft in the field.
Many avionics programs are built
around an electronics engineering
example. The students spend a lot of
time on solid-state and digital circuitry.
Few teach much about batteries,
generators and other components
considered part of the electrical system.
An A&P mechanic may be in the
habit of turning over any problem
involving wires to an avionics
technician. This sets up a difficult
situation because the avionics
technician may not have the requisite
knowledge to troubleshoot the
electrical system.
As more electric aircraft
become certified, both A&P and
avionics programs will need to
adapt. Furthermore, technicians
in the field will need to adapt. For
those institutions doing workforce
development training, electric flying
presents an opportunity. For colleges
and schools with a curriculum revision
process, electric flying presents a
challenge because they have a long
process for incorporating new subjects
or curricula into an existing program.
Soon, some of the 55 electric aircraft
under development will become
certified. Some have the capability
of making a big impact on industries
such as package delivery and medivac.
Those of us teaching in A&P and
avionics need to be prepared. Like
the lesson I keep failing to learn in
simulators, the best approach is long
and stable. We need to be preparing
now for the time when electric aircraft
become common. q
