Goodbye, boomers
I
recently received an email from one of
the employers of my former students at
Pennsylvania College of Technology. Listed
among four pages of openings were 30 positions for
which A&P technicians are qualified and 21 positions
for avionics technicians. In
addition, we recently had multiple
employers on campus recruiting
our aviation maintenance students.
More companies are hiring but did
not send representatives.
Aviation has a reputation as an
industry that goes through cycles.
In the past, there were years when
those entering the field would
need to wait a long time to get
an avionics job. During those
times, these new technicians may
have moved to another field.
With COVID-19, one would have
expected a deep cycle.
Last year at this time, the AEA
Rate and Labor survey reported
only 35% of shops in the eastern

ADS-B INSTALLATIONS.
BUT THERE IS ANOTHER
FACTOR MANY PEOPLE
HAVE IGNORED LATELY:
THE LAST OF THE BABY
BOOMERS ARE REACHING
RETIREMENT AGE.
United States expected their business to increase, while
15% expected their business to decrease. In essence,
those in the industry were expecting a downturn in
business in 2021.
But by mid-year, the Aircraft Electronics Association
reported worldwide business and general aviation

avionics sales had increased four consecutive quarters
dating back to 2020. Things were turning around.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and the related
economic troubles, employment opportunities for entrylevel
aviation maintenance technicians, both avionics
and A&P mechanics, have
remained strong, which seems
counterintuitive. One factor that
helped our industry hang on
through the pandemic was the
backlog of ADS-B installations.
But there is another factor many
people have ignored lately: The
last of the baby boomers are
reaching retirement age.
The first baby boomers were
born in 1946 and are now 75
years of age. The last of the baby
boomers were born in 1964 and
are now 57 years old. According
to the United States Census
Bureau, the peak birthrate was in
1959. Those born during the peak
year are now 62 years old. Also,
according to the Census Bureau, baby boomers make up
approximately 20% of the U.S. population. This 20% will
be at full retirement age, or older, in 2031.
Put another way, 20% of us are beyond, at or near
retirement age. The Society for Human Resource
Management reports people have been retiring at record
