Iris Automation's Casia computer vision system uses off-the-shelf cameras so drones can detect and avoid aircraft by spotting and classifying them
from .75 miles away (on average) up to 1.2 miles. In this 2019 flight test, Casia commanded a 22-pound Applied Aeronautics Albatross drone to spiral
down to avoid a general aviation aircraft.
Iris has flown 16,000 encounters between drones equipped
with Casia and aircraft and helicopters to perfect how the
system works. The flight tests are performed over the desert
near Reno, Nevada, where Iris Automation is based.
There are two functions Casia performs when
monitoring the surrounding airspace. First, it detects and
tracks objects of interest such as the CubCrafters XCub
the company owns and operates. Second, Casia classifies
the air vehicle spotted as a small aircraft, helicopter, etc.
It can detect and track objects up to 1.2 miles with an
average detection range of .75 miles.
Once an " intruder " aircraft is identified, Casia
commands the drone autopilot to execute an avoidance
maneuver almost instantaneously. In some cases, the drone
will spiral down to avoid the aircraft nearby.
The Casia system is now seen by Becker and Iris as a
tool to increase situational awareness for general aviation
pilots when paired with a Becker 3D audio system and
also to advance uncrewed aerial vehicle safety.
The Becker Avionics/Iris Automation collision
avoidance safety capability being developed by the
partners will use Iris Automation's Casia vision system
interfacing with Becker's digital auto management unit,
the AMU6500, to detect, then audibly alert the pilot of
approaching aircraft. When aircraft detected by Casia pose
a collision risk to the equipped aircraft, through the
Becker/Iris combined offering, the Becker AMU6500
system will issue a traffic warning to audibly make the
pilot aware of the intruder aircraft's location.
Becker's AMU6500 is designed for use on helicopters
and fixed-wing aircraft. It has individually programmable
soft keys and functions that can be tailored to the mission
or an aircraft's configuration. The AMU6500 features 3D
audio to improve flight situational awareness and four
transceiver in-/outputs. Three AMUs in a cockpit can
handle 12 transceivers
" It will drive your head to look in the direction of
an aircraft that is probably about 1,000 meters away, "
said Dave Oglesbee, director of sales and marketing for
