line in December 2020 with new cybersecurity and
connectivity services, hardware, and technical support
for both aircraft networks. With three offerings that
comprise cybersecurity and connectivity services,
hardware, and technical support for both the cabin and
flight deck, flight departments have a comprehensive
and customizable solution that addresses in-flight
cybersecurity directly on the aircraft.
Monitoring is the first step in cybersecurity, according
to Bartlett. " If you are not monitoring the aircraft network
activity, how do you know whether they have been
compromised? Worst-case scenario, someone can hack it
and gain control. To improve the aircraft's cybersecurity
posture, you start with a baseline that looks at what is
actually transpiring so you can make informed decisions
on cybersecurity protocols and safety measures. "

Rules and alerts
Working with a catalog of customized rules, the
monitoring system generates alerts when specific
activities violate them, Bartlett explained. Cybersecurity
specialists examine the alerts to determine if the activity
put the aircraft at risk or if it is a false positive.
Cabin passengers face the same cybersecurity
risks threatening their devices at home and in the
office. A number of companies publish - and update
daily - upwards of 100,000 rules addressing known
vulnerabilities, and CCX subscribes to a number of
them for its cabin monitoring system. " When they
discover a new vulnerability, they write a rule that
monitors it. With this many rules, you get a lot of false
positives, so we configure them so the rules are more
applicable to what an operator might want to see, "
Bartlett said.
" What don't exist are specific rules for avionics and
flight deck networks. That's where CCX is different.
