hours riding a bus to get somewhere to play a show. "

Sunshine State, organizers could justify such a decision.
But business aviation people and their community of
businesses and operators need such gatherings.
The solution from NBAA President and CEO Ed
Bolen and his staff was a virtual business aviation
convention and exhibition. Thus, VBACE was born.
Was it as booming as an in-person BACE? No, not by
a long shot. The virtual event drew about onefifth the usual 1,000 exhibitors.
So, was VBACE useful in many of the usual
ways? From the feedback of several who
attended as many virtual sessions as they could
manage, it was good enough to quench their
thirst for quality time with vendors, aircraft
OEMs and their fellow business aviation adherents.
And that's not conceding the backhanded compliment,
" Better than nothing. "
In truth, VBACE was something of a relief for
those concerned that the year would end without
their preferred venue for all things related to business
aviation use.
In the interest of full disclosure, NBAA-VBACE
offered so much to see, hear and learn from that it
challenged the juggling abilities of those who clicked
to join in. But in their usual savvy fashion, the NBAA
staff kept all the usual elements available online even
after the briefing, press conference or unveiling was no
longer " live. "

A message from the NBAA senior executive
Expectations for business aviation's future served
as the focus in the Dec. 2 VBACE Thought Leader
Session, aptly titled " The New Era of Healthy Travel. "
Avionics maker and Aircraft Electronics Association
member company Honeywell sponsored this discussion.
The consensus: With business aviation continuing
a steady, gradual and incremental recovery from an

historic, pandemic-driven decline in flight activity,
industry leaders found ample reasons for optimism,
among them interest from a new wave of clientele, and
strong signs of pent-up demand. Both helped offset
concerns about the pace of global economic recovery,
on which many other signs of recovery depend.
During the discussion, Bolen noted the encouraging
data about flight demand and consumer trends. These
two factors buoyed confidence that business aviation
will emerge from the pandemic stronger and more
adaptive.
Bolen noted an uptick in potential first-time users as
a particularly promising sign.
