The last 12 to 14 months have been quite disruptive
to both pyramids. The disruption has had a big effect on
schools and colleges. In what seemed like a blink of an
eye, safety needs were in jeopardy. For a few, physiological
needs also were in jeopardy. Suddenly, safety became a
concern, which made moving up the learning pyramid
difficult. Simultaneously, professors and teachers were
thrust away from the top of the learning pyramid down into
the lower levels as they learned how to be effective in the
virtual learning environment.
As our industry moves onward, we must be aware of the
following:
* Grade point average - A good way to start a neverending debate is to argue whether or not GPA
is a good indication of competence. For now, I
would side with those saying it does not. Learning
institutions are required to maintain standards, which
means all the disruptions over the last year had the

effect of lowering grades. The difference between an
88% B and a 92% A is smaller than ever.
* Expect recent graduates to have less practice
at hands-on skills. In many cases, laboratory
assignments were reduced to the minimum required.
This was necessary to make up for the time lost
during remote instruction during the spring semester
of 2020. For example, instead of two transponder lab
assignments, the students completed one for a grade.
* Avionics shop managers and owners should rest
assured that learning institutions will graduate only
those meeting minimum requirements. A 2020 or
2021 graduate is no less qualified than one who
graduated in 2018 or 2019.
The past year has been a struggle for all. Few at
institutions of higher education thought safety and
physiological levels of Maslow's pyramid would be in
jeopardy for so many students. Few teachers expected to be
thrust downward on their own learning stage pyramid. Still,
there are pathways to the peak of both pyramids. Students
and teachers alike are following those paths. q
