requent travelers across the North Atlantic
between North America and Europe often arrive
at their destinations after experiencing the
unexpected sight of another aircraft flying parallel to them
several miles abeam their aircraft. These sorts of sighting
didn't start to happen until commercial carriers and private
aircraft began flying regular scheduled and unscheduled

across the Atlantic. That news, in turn, fed a frenzy of spectators
gathered to await Lindbergh's arrival at the Paris airfield, now
the home of the biennial Paris Salon. Few questioned whether
that monoplane was indeed Lindbergh, and for good reason.
In May 1927, air traffic between North America and Europe
existed only in the dreams and aspirations of pilots like
Lindbergh, and in the ambitions of aviation entrepreneurs eager
Separation standards evolved from a time before oceanic surveillance
transoceanic flights. Their routes somewhat paralleled the
track flown by aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh on his
nonstop flight between New York's former Roosevelt Field
and Paris' Le Bourget Airport.
That 33.5-hour flight succeeded in the face of many doubters
who expected Lindbergh's attempt to end like many other
prior attempts to cross the Atlantic nonstop: with Lindbergh's
disappearance, to never again be seen. Lindbergh's attempt to
communicate with fishermen off the west coast of Ireland made
news, confirming that the 27-year-old pilot had at least made it

to see aviation achieve its potential: as a transportation utility
moving masses of people the world around.
So such sightings like seeing Lindbergh inspired hope and
excitement, just like the degree of alarm among the uninformed
or inexperienced in high-flying jets seeing a modern aircraft a
few miles abeam over a vast, empty ocean.
While it's not all that uncommon to see other aircraft
speeding along at the flight levels over land, the sighting of
another jet remains an unexpected event - one that's not all
that common - flying a parallel route over the vast expanse
