Looking through the vast array of function
combinations, the possible applications
for Flex are almost endless.

id-Continent Instruments and Avionics
just brought to market one of its mostambitious undertakings to date - a
versatile, flexible, customizable instrument designed to
allow the customer to decide and define its functions.
It's the company's 2-inch Flex MD23 Series instrument
package, and it stands to find its way
into panels of all types, particularly as
users become aware of its potential and
understand its myriad uses.
According to the company, the 2-inch
digital instrument can receive and display
ARINC 429, analog, discrete, frequency,
temperature, and absolute and differential pressure data
to fulfill the unique requirements of the pilot, engineer
or mission. Flex delivers the convenience of a certified
commercial-off-the-shelf product with the flexibility of a
custom, approved build-your-own instrument.
Looking at the variety of functions available with the
Flex MD23, it's difficult to challenge the company's
contention that the applications available via the Flex
MD23 are, indeed, virtually limitless. Best of all,
customers get to work with Mid-Continent Instruments
and Avionics to define what and how the display
functions for the operator.
Some basics
At a mere inch deep, Flex measures 2.43 inches
by 2.43 inches square. It mounts from the rear of the
panel with four #6-32 machine screws showing its

2.25-inch round bezel to the user. Weight is close to
inconsequential at a mere 170 grams, or 0.4 pounds.
The user can specify that Flex deliver new data to
the cockpit as a complement to some new avionics.
Conversely, it can serve as a modern replacement for
aging instruments of an enormous variety, including

pitot-static applications, such as airspeed, altimeter,
vertical speed and cabin pressure; tachometer,
controllers, such as autopilot, autothrottle, radar altimeter
and user input functions; annunciator-indicator, such as
battery status, engine parameters; data conversion - and
many others.
A glimpse of a small revolution
Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics invested
more than three years in development of the new product
that was publicly announced in late February 2021.
The company designed Flex with a rechargeable
coin cell to provide power to keep alive its memory
of programmed functions; illumination is controlled
directly or remotely for the display. The product is small,
