he General Aviation Joint Steering
Committee, a public-private partnership with
the goal of improving general aviation safety,
used the COVID-19-related break from in-person meetings
to increase outreach to the general aviation community and
pursue other important initiatives.
The GAJSC is a data-driven organization, using general
aviation accident data to determine the risks associated with
different types of flying. The working group then prioritizes
risks to determine workstream, focusing on highest risks
where the group's efforts can make meaningful impact.
The GAJSC's efforts were recently highlighted in the April

5 Federal Aviation Administration General Aviation Safety
Town Hall by Glen Martin, vice president of safety and
technical training for the agency's Air Traffic Organization,
and panelists representing FAA and industry. The panel
noted the marked decrease of GA fatal accidents over the
past decade, in part due to risk-based safety measures
recommended by the GAJSC and implemented by the
industry and the FAA.
Loss of control and controlled flight into terrain are
two areas of focus for the group, resulting in safety
enhancements (recommendations) related to weather
cameras, including " SE-12 Weather Technology -
Weather Cameras: Deploy cost-effective technologies
that can provide real-time weather information

(including actual conditions as viewed through a remote
camera) at remote airports. "
The FAA recently announced expanding the weather
camera program to include 23 locations in Hawaii. This
expansion builds off the program's success in Alaska, as well
as the state of Colorado's efforts to establish a state-operated
weather camera program in cooperation with the FAA.
The FAA is working with aircraft operators and other
stakeholders in Hawaii to identify areas where weather
conditions most frequently impact flight operations, then
select the best locations for camera placement.
Another focus area for the GAJSC is the use of over-thecounter
medications by aviation professionals. In 2015, the
group issued an SE titled " Flight After Use of Medication
with Sedating Effects " calling for a public education/
outreach campaign to promote understanding of the effects of
medications.
The GAJSC worked with the FAA to produce a resource
for aviation professionals to determine their fitness to fly
while taking OTC medications. It is available at https://bit.

The resource provides a list of helpful questions and
considerations for aviators to analyze to determine what
medications they can take and still be safe to fly, as well as
addresses several categories of medications and ingredients
and the potential impacts.
