between the view out the cockpit
window and the view on the
display in the cabin. In some
cases, the camera and display
could enhance the clouds with
contrast, so it has a little better
view than out the window,
especially looking into the sun
or some other challenging views,
according to Randall Bailey. He
is the team lead for the X-59
Flight Deck Interface Technology
and is based at NASA's Langley
Research Center. Prior to joining
NASA, Bailey was technical
director of the Flight Research
Group at the Calspan Corp.
The plan is to give pilots of
the supersonic jet a way to see
forward for all phases of flight,
including takeoffs and landings,
even though an elongated nose
would block the pilot's view out
a typical cockpit window. The
pilots will focus on a nearly 4K
resolution display bordered by
two small windows on the left and
right as backups for flying with
the new display.
The plan is not to create an
aircraft with a loud boom that
shakes windows or the crystal on
the dining room table, but rather
to create a gentle thump like a
heartbeat. This might sound to
people on the ground like a car door
being slammed shut somewhere
down the line in a parking lot. The
nose is elongated to help create this
less-annoying sonic effect.
The X-59 will test how
volunteers in communities
perceive the sonic thump to see
if supersonic aircraft can fly
over land without disturbing
people on the ground. Several
startup companies are developing
supersonic business jets or airline
aircraft, and some want permission
to fly over land if regulators agree.
NASA plans to fly the aircraft
at Mach 1.4 at 55,000 feet over
four to six communities in the
United States between 2024 and
2026. The communities will
include urban, suburban and rural
locations where a month's worth
of flyovers may produce a single
thump on one day and several the
next. Volunteers will be paid a
few dollars each to record their
reactions to determine if the
