The full lineup included in the STC lists the Garmin dual
for the Garmin G700 TXi and added another option for Citation
aircraft. Delivering this system with newly released software
allows operators to interface to existing TCAS II systems or the
Garmin GTS 8000 TCAS II and GTX 3000 transponders with
Columbia Avionics STC ST01691WI. Incorporating dual GTN
750 products will greatly modernize the cockpit and enhances
the safety of the aircraft.
Under this STC, the Citations' existing gyros, radar and
flight instruments are all replaced with newly designed Garmin
systems, among them new dual GRS 79 AHRS, GWX 75
radar, dual GDC 7400 air data computers with RVSM, MD302
Standby Attitude Module and options for GDL-69/A XM
weather, GSR-56 satellite phone and traffic interface options.
The weight savings of this new equipment can provide the
operator with more than 200 pounds of additional useful load for
the aircraft.
And the approval allows installation of Mid-Continent
Instruments and Avionics' MD-302 Standby Attitude Module
in any serial number Cessna Citation 500, 550, S550, 560
including Primus 1000 airplanes.
Earlier this year, Columbia Avionics & Aircraft Services
announced that the Federal Aviation Administration issued an
STC for the Cessna Citation 525 series, for installation of the
Garmin Avionics Modernization Package, which includes the
G600 TXi EFIS and GFC 600 autopilot, among a host of flight
deck components.
Part of the package covered by the STC is replacing the
Honeywell EFIS and autopilot with Garmin equipment
providing the capabilities to fly coupled instrument approaches,
including GPS, ILS, LOC/back course, and VOR. The new
capabilities also cover coupled go-arounds with the push of the
go-around button. Pushing the go-around button triggers the
flight director to display the correct pitch attitude and activates
the loaded missed approach in the GTN navigator.
The package also includes coupled VNAV, a major help in
flying standard terminal arrival approaches. The standard STC
package installs equipment that communicates via high-speed
data busses, thus requiring no converters for LPV, GPSS or
VNAV-type navigation.
With the inclusion of the GFC 600 autopilot, the operator also
gains Garmin's ESP - electronic stability protection. Garmin's
ESP can initiate a correction in the flight controls if the airplane
exceeds predetermined pitch, roll and/or airspeed limitations.
Another safety aspect integral to the autopilot is its Level
Mode feature. Level Mode - activated by the touch of a button
- returns the airplane to straight-and-level flight at the current
altitude, a feature beneficial in pilot incapacitation or upset
events.
G600 TXi EFIS displays with synthetic vision, Garmin GRS
79 AHRS and GDC 7400 air data computers, GTN 750Xi and
GTN 650Xi navigators, GMA 35c audio panel, GTX 3X5DR
ADS-B transponders with diversity, GWX 75 weather radar,
GSR 56 satcom with weather/phone/text and GDL 69/A XM
weather and music, Shadin AIS 380 fuel flow system, MidContinent
Instruments and Avionics MD 302 SAM, MD 93
USB clocks and TA 102 USB ports.
A powerful combination
The acquisition of Columbia Avionics by Blackhawk Aviation
Technologies creates one of the most-capable sources for
avionics, performance and powerplant upgrades. Performance
upgrades for King Airs, Cessna Conquest Is and Cessna
Caravans and Grand Caravans, and Piper Cheyennes go beyond
mere engine swaps.
Blackhawk's packages include changes to the engines'
cowlings, new propellers matched to the power and speed of
the upgraded aircraft, and aerodynamic modifications (cowls,
exhaust strakes, streamlining) and convenience and speed
products from Raisbeck Engineering.
Blackhawk also holds an STC to install True Blue Power
lithium-ion batteries for the King Air 350 and both the standard
and Grand Caravan; as well as composites work on the aircraft
eligible for the engine and other performance upgrades.
Blackhawk's engineers and composites technicians can
rapidly prototype and test new structure using the company's
in-house capabilities; the manufacturing of new composite parts
is also a Blackhawk service offering.
The cowling Blackhawk makes for its Caravan engine
upgrades earned PMA approval in July 2011, a part which
contributes to the takeoff, climb and speed gains of the
powerplant upgrade.
Blackhawk's services range from helping clients move
an idea from design all the way through the process to final
regulatory approval. The company's technicians are experienced
in using a wide spectrum of composites, as well as metals, and
other materials to deliver the ideal solution. And Blackhawk can
work with the client's budget and schedule.
Among the products to emerge from Blackhawk's composites
shop are the cowls integrated into the engine upgrades the
company offers. New propellers are another Blackhawk offering,
beyond the props the company provides with its engine-upgrade
packages. The company offers props from MT-Propellers - both
four- and five-blade - as well as from Hartzell. And Blackhawk
offers an upgraded starter/generator for the Blackhawk XP140
Engine Upgrade, which delivers faster, cooler engine starts and a
1,500-hour no-touch TBO for the unit. q
